October Closes with More than 2 Million Bali Visitors

Bali by the Numbers: Bali on Target to Close 2010 with Record-breaking 2.465 million Foreign Visitors.

(12/13/2010) Official foreign visitor arrival totals show that 223,643 tourists came to Bali in October 2010 – an increase of 6.02% over the arrival numbers for the same month last year (210,935).

Cumulative arrivals through the end of October 2010 reached 2,083,102 representing, on an aggregate basis, a 10.57% increase over 2009. Interpolating total arrivals to Bali for 2010 by assuming the 10.57% rate of improvement holds constant until year's end, Bali should end the year with a record 2.465 million foreign visitors.

Arrivals by Major Markets

• Australia - Australian arrivals were up 46.34% for October 2010 with 62,082 visitors to Bali from "Down Under." Further cementing Australia's position as Bali's number one source of visitors arrival, on a cumulative year-on-year basis through the end of October Australian arrivals are up 48.31%.

• Japan - Japanese arrivals declined a worrisome 44% month-on-month for October 2010 with 17,696 visitors. Once the unchallenged largest source of foreign visitors to the island, Japanese visitors are now less than half the number of Australian visitors coming to Bali each year. On a cumulative year-on-year basis, Japanese visitors are down 24% through the end of October 2010.

• People's Republic of China - The PRC sent 7.96% fewer visitors (17,820) in October 2010 than in the same month in last year (19,362). On a cumulative basis, PRC arrivals are largely flat, only 0.31% ahead of January-October 2009 totals.

• Taiwan - Taiwanese visitors suffered a significant hit in October, declining month-on-month 20.08%. On an aggregate basis, Taiwanese arrivals have improved 6.43% through the end of October as compared to the same period in 2009.

• Malaysia - Bali's near neighbor of Malaysia continues to turn in a stellar performance, driven primarily by cheap airfares. Month-on-month Malaysian arrivals for October 2010 totaled 13,023 – that's a whopping 54.7% improvement over October 2009. On a year-on-year basis, Malaysian arrivals are up 8.8% for January-October 2010 as compared to the same 10 month period last year.

• South Korea - Reversing a month-on-month decline recorded for September, South Korean arrivals to Bali bounced back and improved 10.37% for October 2010 as compared to October 2009. Year-on-year South Korean visitors have declined 1.29%.

• United Kingdom - U.K. tourist arrivals to Bali have moved into negative territory, declining month-on-month by 5.59% in October 2010. Cumulative speaking, the U.K. market still remains strong, improving 13.51% over the first ten months of 2010.

• France - Once a bright spot in the tourist arrival picture, French visitors to Bali continue to decline. Month-on-month French arrivals are down 18.71% for October 2010. Seen on a year-on-year basis through the end of October 2010, French arrivals to Bali are down 4.87%

• Russia - In something of a turn-around, Russian arrival have reversed an earlier decline, improving month-on-month by 30.2% for October 2010. Cumulatively through the end of October 2010, Russian arrivals are up 4.94%.

• Singapore - Still a bright spot, Singapore arrivals went up 27.6% in October 2010. Even more sparkling are year-on-year arrivals from Singapore that are an astounding 64.83% ahead of 2009 through the month ending October.

• The Netherlands - Dutch visitors are down month-on-month by 27.28% and up only 3.56% year-on-year at the end of October 2010.

• U.S.A. - The troubled U.S. economy and air access issues saw U.S. arrivals perform negatively, down 11.04% for October 2010 as compared to October 2009. Cumulative arrivals through the end of October from the U.S.A. are down 5.24%.

• Germany - German travelers to Bali continue to bloom spectacularly. October arrivals ex-Germany were up 31.5% for October 2010 over the same moth in 2009. Year-on-year German travels are up 12.82% through end October 2010.

Regional Results

ASEAN and Asia Pacific arrivals are still Bali's best performers, improving cumulatively by a respective 23.09% and 12.55%. European arrivals are up by 3.29%. Meanwhile, visitors from the Americas are largely flat, up only 0.26%.
